In the Black Fantastic — Reconnecting Black Minds to Our Erased Histories and Sciences
I had the distinct honor of having my work featured on the cover of In the Black Fantastic, a groundbreaking book by British writer and curator Ekow Eshun. This publication is an extension of Eshun’s celebrated exhibition of the same name, which explores how speculative fictions in Black art and culture reimagine narratives of race, gender, and identity. Through its pages, In the Black Fantastic offers a rich tapestry of works spanning photography, painting, sculpture, cinema, graphic arts, music, and architecture, creating a powerful visual and intellectual experience.
To be featured not only within the book but also on its cover is a profound acknowledgment of my artistic practice. My work, deeply rooted in afrofantastic themes, aligns with the book’s exploration of how Black artists use speculative narratives to challenge conventions and envision new possibilities. The inclusion of my art speaks to the resonance of my approach, which blends cultural memory, metaphysics, and visual innovation.
Within the book itself, my contributions are presented alongside works from a diverse range of Black artists who are collectively reshaping the landscape of contemporary art. In the Black Fantastic serves as both a celebration and a source of inspiration, emphasizing the transformative power of storytelling in visual culture. To be part of this seminal project is an affirmation of my commitment to expanding the boundaries of artistic expression and exploring the intersections of identity and imagination.
