Merci à nos ami.e.x.s, nos familles.
The Ẅ XOOL [woo-rhol] festival responds to a common and tenacious observation: that of the absence of black female figures in front of and especially behind the camera. This is not, however, for lack of attempts and legacies left by those who have paved the way. As if the cinema of the Afro-descendant female diaspora played no role in the construction and development of the 7th art in France.
And yet, they exist and their visions matter. For us, it is therefore a question of showing, beyond a common condition of existence, the uniqueness of each of these cinematographic views on the world. They invest all genres: documentaries, science fiction, experimental cinema, drama, comedy… They are unique: in their relationship to image and sound, they write their relationship to light and movement in a personal way. They are numerous and span several languages, times and continents.
Today as yesterday, it is still urgent to recall their presence and to try to stop this spiral of erasure. To fill this lack, which many of us experience, through a festival, is to create a space where to live, celebrate and collectively transmit the beauty of these cinemas, in joy. Because it is also a declaration of love to all these reckless dreamers:
We thank you for these works which dazzle our imaginations.
We will try to take care of it. We are thirsty to expand our lives through your films, to discover unexplored inner territories, to understand each other complex, contradictory and rich, to be surprised and to dream. They have already carried us, many times, and in their projections, we see ourselves free.
